Who we are
Gesstimate (gesstimate.co.uk) is a daily number puzzle run by Mark Roberts, an individual based in the United Kingdom. In this policy, "we" and "us" mean the person running Gesstimate. We are the data controller for the information described here.
Contact us at hello@gesstimate.co.uk about anything in this policy.
What we collect and why
| Information | Why | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Plus waiting list: your email address, the wording you agreed to, and the date and time you signed up | To email you when Gesstimate Plus launches, with the launch offer | Your consent |
| Anonymous visit statistics: pages viewed, rough country, device type, and game events such as "puzzle finished" | To understand how the game is used and improve it | Legitimate interests |
| Technical logs: your IP address and browser details, kept briefly by our website host | To deliver the site securely and prevent abuse | Legitimate interests |
We don't ask for your name, age or location, and we don't build profiles of players.
Game progress on your device
Your streak, statistics and today's guesses are saved in your browser's local storage so the game remembers them. This information stays on your device and is never sent to us. You can clear it at any time by clearing your browser's site data, or with the Reset link at the bottom of the game.
Cookies
We don't set cookies. Our analytics service doesn't use cookies either. The local storage described above is used only to provide the game you asked to play.
Who helps us run Gesstimate
We use a small number of service providers. They handle information only on our instructions.
- Formspree receives and stores waiting-list sign-ups. Formspree is based in the United States.
- Netlify hosts the website and keeps short-term technical logs. Netlify is based in the United States.
- Plausible Analytics provides cookie-free, anonymous visit statistics. Plausible is based in the European Union and doesn't collect personal data.
- Google Fonts supplies the typefaces. When your browser downloads a font, Google receives your IP address.
Where information is processed outside the UK, these providers use safeguards approved under UK data protection law, such as standard contractual clauses.
Advertising
We don't currently show third-party adverts. If we add them in future, we'll update this policy first and ask for your consent where the law requires it.
How long we keep information
- Waiting-list emails: until we've sent the Plus launch email, and then for no more than 12 months. We delete your email sooner if you unsubscribe or ask us to.
- Anonymous statistics: kept in aggregate form, which can't identify you.
- Technical logs: kept by our host for a short period, then deleted automatically.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us to:
- tell you what information we hold about you and give you a copy
- correct it
- delete it
- stop using it, or object to how we use it
You can withdraw your consent to the waiting-list email at any time by using the unsubscribe link in any email we send, or by emailing hello@gesstimate.co.uk. We'll reply within one month.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint. We'd appreciate the chance to sort it out first, so please contact us.
Children
Gesstimate is a general-audience game that anyone can play without giving personal information. The Plus waiting list is for people aged 13 and over. If you believe a child under 13 has signed up, email us and we'll delete their details.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we use your information, we'll update this page and the date at the top. If a change affects waiting-list members significantly, we'll tell you by email.
